Herbs have been used by mankind well before they started to record history and culinary herbs in fact have been known to man for almost as long. The earliest recorded instance of their use was in the first century and later in the seventeenth century there was mention of seventy three different such herbs that were being used in salads.

In the modern times, culinary herbs have invited more attention and there is a veritable resurgence in their use. People that are in need of cooking healthy foods are looking to these herbs that do not contain fat or calories and so are truly beneficial to our health; this is making them want to find out more about these herbs and their uses.

Even doctors recommend their use, especially when they recommend their patients to consume diets with limited salt intake; such herbs can enhance the flavor of the dish and do so without adding any sodium to the foods.

The more adventurous among us that wish to use these herbs even go a step ahead and raise their herbs in their home gardens and in this way are developing a useful hobby and it also makes cooking more fun to do.

However, when using culinary herbs in seasoned foods it is essential that you do not use them too liberally. The main aim should be to improve the flavors inherently found in different foods and not to be the dominant ingredient.

You also have the option of cooking with herbs that are in dry form and those that are fresh. When it concerns the dried herbs you can used them to enhance flavors and this can also be achieved by toasting or even dry roasting the herbs.

In the case of cooking with fresh herbs you will do well to add these to cold food dishes and that too when the dish is at room temperature. You can also mince the herbs and add them to a meal after having cooked the dish and it can also serve as a garnishing to different dishes.

It is possible to experiment as much as you like when cooking with fresh culinary herbs as there are no rigid rules that need to be followed. You should however try and experiment with small quantities first and then when you get the desired results you can use larger quantities.

Some rules that need to be followed include avoiding mixing two strong herbs together; when the flavor from a food is weak then you need to add lesser amount of the herb in order to strike the right balance.

When you use dried herbs as culinary herbs, they need to be concentrated more than is the case with fresh herbs and when it comes to chopping up fresh herbs be sure to chop the leaves to a fine state as this helps in releasing more oils as well as provides better flavors.
